Mayor Michelle Nelson was elected Mayor of the Village of Flossmoor in April of 2021.
Mayor Michelle grew up in Kansas City, Missouri but crossed the state line to attend the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. She married her college sweetheart, Cameron, and in 2003 she fell in love with the Village of Flossmoor while sitting in a Metra train car. Views of the tree-lined streets, quaint downtown, and variety of architectural styles prompted her to get off the train and get to know the neighbors and business owners. Soon after, she and her husband put down roots in Flossmoor where they raised their four children.
Mayor Michelle is also the co-founder of H-F Robotics, a founding member of the Board of the Homewood Science Center and the Foundation for the Preservation of Flossmoor History, an ex-officio member of the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial, Inc., and a volunteer for multiple community organizations. Mayor Michelle was a commissioner on Flossmoor’s Zoning Board of Appeals for 12 years before being elected Mayor.
Mayor Michelle has served on the executive board and transportation subcommittee of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association since 2022. She represents the Southland as a member of the Council of Mayors Executive Committee of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP).
She believes in the strength of working together to create a thriving and supportive community.
